Session 4

September 8

The Gang's All Here

Returning to Sual's, the group finds Arbin has made a new friend, a gladiator named Karan. Karan has been fighting in Baz's fight pit and Arbin met him in Sual's casino while upgrading some of the games. After the group fills Arbin in on what they've learned Peter enters the bar with Annabel. Though she was fired for helping the group investigate, she is still loyal to Leanna and wants to help.

She explains that Leanna and Carson had been discussing making their relationship known. Carson had a plan to curry favor with Baz and then to seek his assistance in convincing Leanna's father to bless their union. However, Leanna's father found out about them and forbade them from seeing each other. On the day Carson left Leanna received a note from him telling her Baz refused to help and that he had a plan to make a large score and return for her so they could run away. While this did point to Carson betraying Baz, some things still didn't add up.

As Myrnin has been investigating various aspects of the happenings, he is able to notice that the handwriting on the note Leanna received is the same as the handwriting on the note he found in Argus's room from the person that hired Argus to kill Fergal and his family. This solidifies that the two incidents are connected and it is likely someone wanted to make it look like Carson was betraying Baz as it wouldn't have been possible for Carson to hire Argus as he was already out of town by then. When Baz joins the group he is able to confirm that he never discussed Leanna with Carson.

Once More Into the Breach

The group decides to head back to the ruins, this time with Myrnin and Karan joining. Entering the ruins again the group turns to the left this time, exploring new areas. At the entrance Myrnin is able to identify the statue as Stradavelich The Conqueror, one of the Seven Archfiends. This points to this ruins being an ancient Tiefling temple. The writing at the base of the statue is an old dialect of Infernal and worn away but Myrnin recognizes it to be a common saying that translates to "Believers understand all that others fear to know."

After finding a disabled trap and fighting some skeletons, the group finds the body of a man that appears to have died around the same time as Carson. The group finds a dagger, a vial of poison and a note on him. The dagger is of fine quality and bears the symbol of Valka, the Svitani God of War. This along with his clothing points to him being from Svitani. The note reads:

Carson has been assigned to retrieve a high value
item for Baz from Brath Neviny in Cladach. He is to
leave in the morning and will travel by the North Road.
Allow him to retrieve the item, then kill him, dispose
of the body, and take the item back to the Grey Wolf.
I will cover our tracks here in Cothrom.

Stop! Thief!

Upon exiting the ruins the group is confronted by a clan of Gnolls who accuse them of being horse thieves. After defeating them in battle the group puts it together that the Gnolls took the assassin's horse and intended to also take Carson's. This is why they only found Carson's horse the first time they came to the ruins.

The Grey Wolf

Upon returning to Cothrom, the group meets with Baz. He is able to fill in some information that starts to piece the puzzle together. He tells the group that crime in Svitani was overseen by the Temna Rada, a council of families who each oversaw a region. It seems a few months ago someone killed several heads of families and an upstart who calls himself The Grey Wolf used the chaos to consolidate power and influence for himself. With the various incidents that have been taking place, all seemingly connected, Baz believes that someone from the Grey Wolf's organization is interfering in his affairs in Cothrom. He asks the group to stay on under his employ and help him with some other jobs as he continues to look into what is happening. While the group agrees, Karan decides to step away and return to his work in the fighting pit.
